Babys erste Garderobe – was Dein kleiner Schatz wirklich braucht

Baby's first wardrobe – what your little treasure really needs

The last few weeks before birth are magical – and a little exciting.
Between the hospital bag, the nursery, and nesting, the big question suddenly arises: What does my baby actually need to wear?

You hear so much – from endless lists to minimalist advice – and the truth lies somewhere in between. So let's be honest: you don't need a dresser overflowing with stuff, but a few carefully chosen pieces will make life so much easier in the first few weeks.

Immediately after birth

The very first thing your baby needs after birth is clothing – warm, soft and comfortable.
It's best to have a few items already in your closet or hospital bag.

Bodysuits are absolute lifesavers: they keep everything in place and are easy to put on and take off thanks to snap fasteners. To start, about six to eight in sizes 56 and 62 are enough – ideally made of pure cotton and with long sleeves to keep your newborn nice and warm.

On top of that come rompers – equally practical because nothing slips out of place and the baby is completely wrapped up. Here too , six to eight are perfectly sufficient. If you're having a summer baby, a few short-sleeved versions are fine.

For this you'll need a few pairs of socks – tiny, but so important! Ideally made of a cozy material, so that little feet always stay warm.

And of course: two hats . A light cotton hat for indoors or mild days, and a warmer version made of wool or fleece for cool evenings or winter babies.

A light jacket or two are also practical when it gets cooler – easy to put on and take off and pleasantly soft.

If your baby arrives in winter, a snowsuit is a good idea to keep them warm on their first walk. In summer, a light sun hat with UV protection and a light cotton jacket will suffice.

🌸 What you should look out for when choosing baby clothes

Most importantly: your baby should feel comfortable. Clothing for newborns should be soft, breathable, and free of rough seams or scratchy labels.
Clever snap fasteners at the shoulders and crotch make diaper changes easier – and a wide neckline makes changing clothes stress-free.

In the first few weeks , bodysuits and rompers are ideal because they stay in place and keep the baby warm. Soft materials like cotton or wool-silk blends feel best against sensitive skin.

💛 The little checklist for baby's first wardrobe

If you'd like some guidance, this compact list can serve as a loving reminder of what to think about – not as a rule, but as a point of reference:

🧺 Sizes : 50/56 and 62/68 – so you're well equipped for the first few months

👕 12 bodysuits (preferably wrap bodysuits made of cotton)
👚 6 T-shirts or thin sweaters
👶 6 rompers or pants with a soft waistband
🧢 2–3 little hats
🧥 2-3 baby jackets
🧤 2 pairs of scratch mittens
🧦 3 pairs each of thin and thick socks
🌙 2–4 pajamas or overalls
🧣 4 triangular scarves

🧼 3 muslin squares

For summer babies, additionally:
☀️ 1 sun hat or cap with UV protection

In the end, it's not the quantity that counts, but the quality. Soft fabrics, practical cuts and a little flexibility – that's all your little treasure needs to feel safe and secure.

And don't worry: you'll soon discover which pieces you reach for most. Babies grow quickly, but the memories of those first tiny outfits last forever. 💛
